I’ve been an iPhone user for maybe two months, and I’m loving it. It’s so practical, so useful that I don’t think I could ever live without it. One thing I like doing is looking out for useful third party applications. Some of them are really amazing. I’ll list the ones I love best here, they’re – according to my humble self – essential. Note that my iPhone is a 3G running with Fido and not Jailbroken.
- Shazam: This one really is amazing. It will “listen” to the song that’s currently playing for 12 (configurable) seconds, submit it to its motherland, analyze it and give you the artist, song title and a bunch of other information. Truly a godsent for music lovers.
- Twitterrific: If you use Twitter (if you don’t, you should!), this is a must-have. It has the best display and features out there, it makes it incredibly easy to keep in touch. I liked it so much that I paid 9.99$ for the ad-free premium version.
- pTerm: A definite must-have for coders or sysadmins. It brings SSH to your iPhone with every feature you could ask for. Its only limitation is the actual iPhone. Using the tiny keyboard over a realtime SSH connection is kind of a pain, but for quick fixes, updates or maintenance, it does the job.
- Asphalt 4: This one is a game. Moreso, a racing game. If you liked Need For Speed and the likes, you’ll definitely want to have this one. Although it’s not free (9.99$), it’s well worth the price. It has a decent longevity and will keep you entertained for at least two weeks.
- Texas Hold’Em: A classic for every mobile platform. This poker application however sets a new edge in mobile poker gaming. The graphics are sweeeeet, and the difficulty is actually challenging. A must-have for Poker fans.
- iWik: Wikipedia on your iPhone. The one difference this one has with other Wikipedia-syndicating application is that they filter the content through their own servers and reformat it for your iPhone. It gives a nice render and everything is easy to find. It’s just 0.99$, too.
- Koi Pond: This one is pretty much only for show. I used to use iBeer to show how nifty the iPhone was – now I use Koi Pond. I can’t begin to list the features, but if you wanna show off the power of your iPhone, this is what you want.
- STM Mobile: I don’t even use this one but I have to give a shout out to a fellow Montreal developer. It’s a great app, too. This app will save your favorite bus stops and tell you when the next bus is scheduled to stop. Obviously only useful if you’re a frequent user of Montreal’s public transportation. The only thing I don’t like about this app is that it’s not endorsed by Montreal’s STM – which is a shame.
- Bonus: WordPress’ WPtouch iPhone Theme: This one isn’t an iPhone application, but it’s a must-have for every WordPress blog owner out there. It will dynamically render an iPhone-friendly version of your blog to visitors who check your site out with their iPhone. It really is nice to come across iPhone-compatible blogs. For a demo, check out this site on your iPhone!
So what about you? What iPhone apps can’t you live without or would like to praise?
